Just edit the smart quotes settings file SmartQuotes.xml (mine was in C:\Users\Philipp\AppData\Roaming\MemoQ\AutoCorrect. The "AppData" folder is usually hidden, you have to be able to see hidden folders):

- Make a backup copy of the original file in case you fudge something up.

- Open the file with an editor, search for the language code you need and change the standard quotes, which will then be used automatically in MemoQ if you tick "Replace straight quotes with smart quotes" under Translation settings > Auto correct.

- Close MemoQ, open it again et voilà.

For example, I changed my settings for Spanish like this:

Hi,

I just received a job in which the client is asking me to only translate lines that originate in columns C to S. I am not sure how to import the document so that these are the only lines that I will be translating. Could someone give me some pointers as to how to proceed?

Thanks in advance!

PS: Please let me know if you need any additional info in order to provide assistance.

This is easy enough to do. In memoQ, you can choose at the time of import any ranges you wish to translate. Thus, you do not need to hide the parts you do not want, which would be the other workaround, although a bit riskier since your customer might have already hidden things that you would unhide yourself when unhiding the non-translatable bits.

To select the desired ranges in memoQ (you need to have Excel installed):
1. In your project, use Import with options (instead of simply Import). Choose your file and click OK.

2. In the Document import options dialog box, choose the link "Change filter and configuration".

3. You should now see the Document import settings tabbed dialog box. In the main tab, you will see different checkboxed about items from your Excel file you can include or leave out. Choose the link "Select ranges in Excel". Your Excel file opens, with a little panel called "Mark selected ranges".

4. In Excel, use the usual method to select the translatable ranges one by one (or several ranges at a time by clicking Ctrl as you select different ranges) and click "Add ranges" for each translatable range/group of ranges. The selected ranges are now shown with a blue highlight.

5. When you are done selecting the parts you want, click Finish. You will land in the Document import settings dialog again, where you can see the ranges you have selected.

Click OK until your document is imported. This should be it! I hope this helps.

Doesn't look that easy to me... :D

Can you just hide the columns you don't need?

It's not that difficult once you see the actual dialogue, which is more or less self-explanatory.

Hi Tomás,

I'm sorry to say that I've been working with a MemoQ staff member to get this solved, and he provided the same solution which I followed to the letter. I tried both the "select ranges in Excel" and also the "Add range" options - I used the command Sheet1!E1:K920 for the latter.

Upon importing, the total word count comes to 305 which is off to a staggering degree considering the size of the document - so I'm either doing something terribly wrong or the Excel document is formatted in a strange manner; I'm not proficient enough in said program to ascertain this for myself.

If you (or anyone else) has another idea as to how to fix this, please let me know!

And Giovanni - that is a good idea; I'll fiddle around in Excel for the time being and attempt to hide/delete the unneeded columns, then re-import the document. Fingers crossed.

When trying to create a new project, I get this message:

What does this mean, and how can I resolve it?

Thank you!

I don't know much about the MemoQ server, but it could be that the version of the client software you use (the MemoQ software on your workstation) is too much behind the server software version.

For the freelance version, MemoQ ensures backward compatibility up to one major level, but if you are performing server operations, you may need a newer version on your workstation.

Just a qualified guess.

Hello, community.

I'm about to translate an entry blog post, and the client wants the image to be translated as well.

Months ago I used the trial version of MemoQ for college, and it was kind of easy to translate images, tables, etc., without losing the format. So I'm looking for a similar tool. Right now I'm using Wordfast Anywhere because I can't afford a license for Trados or MemoQ, but I don't like the final results on the image.

Any advice?

Thank you!

Build a 2-column table with source language on the left and target on the right. Let your client do non-translation work themselves. Most probably they would be happy if you also do the work of a janitor along with your translation. Is it that difficult for you to clean their rooms?

Post title: Thank you. Job done.

Thank you everyone for your help. I was able to complete my job.

I built a Trados project without making changes to Word files (no hidden text). Then I opened several to ten files at a time to translate them. When I attempted to open all 77 files together, I was never successful. There were a few phrases that I wanted a backward autopropagation (i.e. I wanted to update my translation for files that weren't open at that point), I opened those previously-translated files. There were no graphics but the size of Word files and the number of those files appeared to be a big burden to Trados. I wondered how memoQ might behave, and how it would be with my other computer (newer laptop), but I did not try them out.

How to type apostrophes and quotes in MemoQ

Poster: Samuel Murray

Hello everyone

I'm doing a small test translation in MemoQ, and I discovered that MemoQ does a few weird things with apostrophes and quotes. For example, if I type a apostrophe plus a letter that doesn't take an accent directly after a space, MemoQ writes a comma (!). Yes, so if I type ' and then n, then MemoQ writes ,n instead of 'n or ’n or even ‘n. In mid-word (i.e. if the preceding character is not a space), MemoQ always writes a closing single quote when I try to type an apostrophe, e.g. if I type I and then ' and then m, MemoQ writes I‘m instead of I'm or I’m. How can I fix this? It gets weirder when I try to type double quotes. If I type " and then x and then ", MemoQ writes ,,x‘‘ instead of "x" or “x”. I'm using the US International keyboard in Windows.

Thanks
Samuel

Post title: Autocorrect

It sounds as if you have enabled smart quotes under AutoCorrect. Just switch them off. In some languages, for example German, the opening quote can look like a comma, for example:

„Guten Tag, Mann“
‚Guten Tag, Mann‘

Danish also traditionally used quotes like this, but the influence from English means that it's more common to see the following today:

”Goddag, mand”
’Goddag, mand’

It's been four years ago. I must have referred the matter to their technical assistance because there I only had one unsolvable problem all the years that I used MemoQ. I can't remember any details now, but they should be able to help.

The worst technical issue I'm having lately has been going on for almost a year now. MemoQ, all of a sudden, uses about 6 GBytes of my memory, out of the blue, and the only solution is to shut it down using Task Manager and reopening it.
I've checked forums and realized several people are facing this problem too. Killgray simply wasn't able to fix it yet, and when you ask for help, they don't know what to do.
I paid for MemoQ for three years in a row, to make sure I had the latest versions and online assistance. This year, for the first time, I'm not paying for it. I won't pay for it until I'm sure this issue has been resolved. And if this doesn't happen until the end of next year, I'm gladly moving on to Trados.

It seems to happen in files with many symbols, such as computer specifications. I haven't seen the problem in version 8.5 yet, but then again I haven't worked with such files in version 8.5 yet.

I have a couple of MemoQ support pages full of unresolved bug reports.

Yes, it's awfully slow to get bugs fixed, but Trados doesn't seem to be any better in that respect, and I don't like the Trados UI either. In fact I'm trying to get rid of my Trados licence, which I regret.

I don't want to move to Trados. I tried it before I chose MemoQ, and my choice had MANY reasons. But if Killgray is not able to solve such a serious issue like this one, which has been going on for over a year now, how trustworthy are they? It's unacceptable for such an expansive software.
I'm hoping they'll fix it soon, but I'm not contacting their helpdesk anymore, because I've done it twice, and they surely have no clue on how to solve it.
