Hi guys!

I have been trying to figure out how to play with the 'fuzzy' terminology in MQ Termbases, but I don't manage completely.
For instance, how would you input the French term "boîte de vitesses" so that it also appears when it is written in one segment as "boite de vitesses"?

Thanks a million

JC

Hi,

the box greys out because there's no need to check it at all: it will (should) find and replace anything you enter as natural text, if you want the spaces inclusive, then enter [space] + your 3 words.

The box is only to find/replace things like "string" and not "strings", "Darwin" and not "Darwinism" etc.

The entire text contains multiple strings of

'Mary Jane shoe'
and
'Mary Jane shoes'

I only want to replace the first as the second is ok. If I do this however, I will end up with multiple instances of
'Mary Jane shoess'
from the second being replaced too.

I know i can find and replace shoess with shoes later but it would be useful to know if there is a way to use 'match only whole words' on strings because it is something i would use frequently.

No, I don't think that the SR function in MemoQ is that elaborated. It would be easy (and I would highly welcome it) if the SR could accept RegEx commands which presently is not the case.

"MemoQ 6.2 has reached its end of life"?

That's what MemoQ tech support told me when my MemoQ 6.2.25 suddenly stopped either picking up terms from my term base or display results of "fragment assembling" in the right-side window.

The weirdest thing is that when I use [ctrl] [p] to look up terms in my term base, I could see them stored in there. But whenever I do a "pretranslate", terms don't get picked up at all.

MemoQ tech support suggested that I pay $150 to upgrade to MemoQ 2013 because they no longer will support MemoQ 6.2.25.

I spent $500+ last year to buy MemoQ 6.2.25 and certainly don't feel it's justified to spend another $150 this year to just make the software behave normally as it should have.

However, I'm kind of stuck here because I do use MemoQ on my regular translation work. Now that "pretranslate" is not picking up the correct amount of fragments, my translation productivity is greatly affected. Before I switch to my other CAT tool for my regular work, I'd like to ask if anyone can help me with my predicament.

Appreciate any help I can get here.

..because MemoQ upgrades and support are combined. If you want to keep working with MemoQ it's probably best to keep upgrading every year. You'll always have the latest version and support that way. I don't know that I am entirely happy with what in essence turns out to be a yearly subscription, but that's the way they roll over there.

memoQ 6.2 is only one-year old and should still be supported IMO. As I understand it, "end of life" merely means they won't be releasing new 6.2.x versions after 6.2.25. That would make sense since 6.2 has been superseded by 6.5 and 6.8.

Technical support for memoQ is included for the first year, but is paid thereafter. You probably purchased your license more than one year ago, and if you didn't pay the annual support/maintenance fee, you are not eligible for support from Kilgray.

IMO, it makes sense to pay the annual fee, because 1) it's reasonable (much lower than what SDL charges for their competing tool, for instance), 2) memoQ development is fast-paced (we got 6.2, 6.5 and 6.8 all within one year).

That said, the problem you're describing doesn't sound like an inherent bug in memoQ, but rather like a data corruption problem. What happens if you create a brand-new project and a brand-new database: are recognized terms and assembled fragments displayed in the translation results pane?

Bonjour Dominique,

I don't think you understood me, or I didn't explain myself well.
It's about how to introduce terms so that they show whatever the manner they appear in my text (even if they are wrong, which often happens in French).
For instance, if I enter "boîte de vitesses" (correctly, with the "^"), it won't show in the TB window if the text says "boite de vitesses", because there is no "^".
So my question is: how should I enter this term so that it recognizes these possible variations. Fuzzy? Custom?...

I hope it's clearer now

Thank you
JC

Hi,

To my understanding, you can use any old version of MemoQ you want, also because you have paid for it. Just install and activate it online with your serial number. If your support has ended, you will not be able to use any *newer* version that came out after your support has ended.

If Killgray hasn't changed its license politics (others may only offer a license per time, like Star Transit or Wordfast), that's how I understand it.

Post title: Fuzziness in memoQ

What I meant is that memoQ is not designed to handle random fuzziness that can occur anywhere in a word, like when it's misspelt (eg. compatable instead of compatible, boite instead of boîte etc.).

memoQ will let you enter terms in its database with prefix matching. This is very convenient with heavily inflected languages (I'm using it with my main source language, Finnish). However, it is not meant to address randomly misspelt words.

Maybe other tools like SDL Trados Studio would be better suited for your needs, as they may have the kind of fuzziness in terminology recognition that you're looking for.

After your much clearer explanation, I have a better understanding of what the tech support was trying to tell me in his email and I will seriously consider purchasing that "yearly subscription" package he suggested.

As for the data corruption possibility, I did create a new project, but it's still behaving the same. It's even showing that behavior in a new project I created in MemoQ after I found this issue. I also re-installed MemoQ 6.2.25, but it didn't help.

It started to show this behavior two to three days ago. Not sure if this had anything to do with the regular Windows 7 update routine. I also own Deja Vu X2, so just out of curiosity, I tried creating the same new project in DVX. The fragment assembling and term base worked fine in DVX for that new projects created. For the problematic old project, I'll export term base and TMX file and from MemoQ to DVX and experiment a little more.

I have to admit that after working with MemoQ continuously for one year, I'm getting used to its interface and commands. For some reason, when it comes to Mandarin Chinese in Word, MemoQ handles its format a little better--less tweaking with format in Word after exporting.

Hello, I bought a license for MemoQ in 20112 and installed it in a PC. Now, I want to install it in my laptop, but the Kilgray.con page sent me the following message.

"Network Access Message: The page cannot be displayed

Explanation: The page you requested could not be reached, due to a proxy server configuration problem."

Do you know the exact changes required at the configuration level to Access the page?

Thank you in advance!

I'd be surprised if your problem is related to a Windows update. If you think it is specific to 6.2.25 and did not occur in previous builds, you may want to revert to an older build. You can download them from kilgray.com (*): just use the link for 6.2.25, but substitute the number of the build you're interested in. I must admit my 6.2.x is stuck at 6.2.19. I haven't bothered upgrading it, since I'm using the latest 6.8 anyway. I've been keeping 5.0, 6.0, 6.2 and 6.5, just in case, since a strong point of memoQ is that it's so compact (a fraction of the disk space consumed by SDL Trados Studio + MultiTerm).

(*) except their server cannot be accessed at the time of this writing.

Post title: Thanks Dominique for suggesting to try earlier versions

It's a great idea.

MemoQ tech support offered me to try out the new 2013 version for two weeks, but I think reverting back to the older versions is a also good way to test this behavior too. I will do both when I get a chance.

It's just I couldn't think of any reason that will set off this sudden "malfunction" on my part other than that coincidental Windows update routine. This version 6.2.25 had been working fine until two days ago.

Anyway, I'll test different versions and post the final results. As you said, I do like MemoQ (more than Trados) for its simplicity and intuitive navigation. I sincerely hope I can resolve my issue here so I can keep using my favorite CAT tool.

SDL WorldServer WSXZ files

memoQ can work directly on many SDL packages and their help files say they can work on SDL Worldserver package files. However, I don't see a reference to the WSXZ Worldserver package filetype. Does anyone know if memoQ can work on WSXZ file? I would very much prefer working on them in memoQ than Studio, if possible.

I now see this question has been recently answered at [url removed] , which says to export the WSXZ file as SDLXLIFF and work in memoQ on that, which sounds like a practical solution.
