Importing projects from SDL Worldserver

Hello,

I have a new client who send all their projects via Worldserver. I do have Studio, but I'd much rather work in MemoQ. According to Kilgray's webpage I should be able to import exported files by selecting "Import with options" but I can't seem to get that to work. Any advice?

Thanks in advance,
Emma

Using a general dictionary

Please pardon my ignorance if this question has an obvious answer. I am very new to memoQ.

I want to use a general dictionary as I translate in this piece of software. In other words, I would like to use the equivalent of Merriam-Webster or the OED in order to verify or ascertain the meanings of words from various fields in the source language.

So far, all that I see is something called EuroBank.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Well, I am. I purchased memoQ a few months ago - it's the first major CAT tool I purchased because I wanted to, not because my client demanded it, and the more I use it the more I like it.

I like the interoperability with other filetypes - especially SDL filetypes such as SDLXLIFF and TTX. I haven't had any trouble importing and exporting these other companies' filetypes and so far the finished projects have been usable by the client flawlessly - they don't even know that I didn't use the original tool to do their project.

I have just started using the "Muse" feature and am impressed. It seems to provide on-the-fly suggestions of phrases and idioms which I must have used at some point in the past in my translation memory, which is not only a great time saver but I feel it also improves the quality of my work.

Finally, it also seems to keep up with my typing. As fast as I can type and move on to the next segment it keeps up, even though I'm using TMs that are quite large.

The few problems I have had I have found Kilgray support to be quick and knowledgable.

I have no regrets so far in spending the money for it.

I’ve never used MemoQ, but I do have a suggestion: Xbench from Apsic. You can get a version for free, and it’s worth getting in its own right, but one thing it does is semi-automatic web searches. You can configure it to look up selected words in an online resource with a keyboard shortcut.

Thanks, Mark.

Xbench looks like a great tool for QA outside of memoQ, but what about a multi-purpose dictionary within memoQ?

I could always just use a dictionary in print form, but it's more convenient for me to see it right next to the segments that I am translating.

Hi Emma,

If it's XLZ, you should be able to do that. If it's WSXZ, you can open that in Studio and export the SDLXLIFF files to memoQ.

Best regards,
István

Hi folks,

Are floating windows for the TM. glossary, concordance etc. possible at all? I have looked everywhere but cannot find any such option. I have two large monitors and I would like to have the editor window on one screen and all additional windows at the other one.

Thanks,
Natalia

Natalia,

If you are talking about the translation results window, it's not removable but you have the option of having it display on top or on the right side using F11.

If you do concordance search (Ctrl+K), the search results window pops up and you can move it to your second monitor.

Hi Natalie,

In fact, MemoQ is very customizable. If you find the Editor overcrowded, you can try playing with different settings under Tools>Appearance to change fonts and colors and to make current segment stand out from the rest of the segments.
Have fun!

Hi Chun-yi, I have already adjusted everything in accordance with my preferences. Moving windows to another monitor is something I am missing very much. I got used to something like this: [url removed] #1717231

It's a pity that it is impossible to do the same in MemoQ.

I want to find and replace a string of three words, but when I type the second word in the search box, the 'Only whole words' option changes to grey and cannot be selected. How can I find and replace a string of 'whole' words? Thank you.

I would try to put the whole string in quotation marks as you would normally do it when searching with a search engine.

Thanks for the suggestion, I just tried it. Unfortunately it searches for the quotation marks as part of the string. The only whole words option is still not available.

I am brandnew to memoQ.

I figured some of it out and also have the memoQ QuickStartGuide 5 0 EN, however, I need help figuring out how to make memoQ showing me repetitions of my own translations.

What I mean is: I translated the line: Jane has a pretty bird... and this text appears later again and I want a full or fuzzy match. But I am getting no help in this regard from memoQ

I created a TM (or think at least that I created one). But I get no repetitions in memoQ.

Also, I figured how to add terms and their translations to the memoQ data base. But they don't show up when the same term comes up later in the text.

As of now, I have to say that Wordfast is much easier. You just create a TM and highlight the terms that go in the glossary and all is shown to you.

But my customer wants me to work in memoQ.

Can you please help me with these two problems?

Much obliged.

Post title: Fuzzy match settings, Advanced Lookup settings

Hi Pristine,

What you personally call "repetitions" is called Fuzzy Match or Concordance Strings by MemoQ.

Fuzzy matches:
A fuzzy match is displayed in red in the result window on the right, containing both the source and the target of a past translation, provided that the source in your memory is similar to your current sentence you want to translate. This similarity is expressed by a percentage. So, in order to display such a match, your Fuzzy Match settings must not be too high. To give you useful returns, I'd recommend you go into

Tools > Options > TM Settings (browse through the icons on the upper side).

Here, make a clone of the Default settings and change the clone's settings to your convenience. If you want lots of matches to be returned, I would set it to 40 for Minimum Match, and 75 for a Good Match.

Concordance strings:
Even if you don't get a fuzzy match, MemoQ can display which expressions from your current sentence are already in your memory. This is displayed in orange in the result window. Here again, if you want more returns, you will have to fine-tune the settings. Also, MemoQ can not know the translations of these expressions, the program only knows that they have already been translated.
To retrieve the translated text, double-click on the orange expressions.
To fine-tune the settings, go to

Tools > Options > Advanced Lookup Settings.

Here, for lots of returns, I would set the numbers from up to down as 1,2,10,6.

I hope this will help you getting started.
Greets,
Mike

Once you get used to it you will find memoQ is as easy to use as Wordfast - I use both. The same applies to adding a term to the memoQ termbase - highlight source and target and hit Ctrl+Q and it's done.

Once you start using more advanced features such as Muses and Live Corpora I think you'll find it's even more useful.

It did take me awhile to get used to the shortcuts.
