Thanks for the suggestion. But no luck, unfortunately -- I still end up being told I have to restore the project from the Recycle Bin, which is blank.

One desperate measure I am considering is uninstalling and clean-installing MemoQ again from scratch, in the hope this will erase its 'false memory' of the project being in its Recycle Bin. Before doing so I will move the project.mprx file to a temporary directory -- in the hope that clicking it in Windows Explorer will then open it once again. I've been told this might work as a last-ditch solution.

I enjoy working with MemoQ, but my goodness for such an expensive product it sure has its fair share of bugs I've had to deal with over the years!

Post title: My MemoQ Projects

Projects of mine disappear from the MemoQ interface sometimes, but if I open the 'My MemoQ Projects' folder (in Documents -> memoQ) I invariably find it there and if I click on the project in question it magically reappears. Might not work in your case but worth trying... (

In your case you might find it in the 'Recycle Bin' folder which is in the 'My MemoQ Projects' I just mentioned)

(Sorry, answered too quickly (got to take the dog out!), I've just re-read your post and seen that you've done that!!)

Post title: Nuclear option

Thanks again for the suggestions, really appreciated. Sadly I don't have a Kilgray SMA so I'm on my own when disaster strikes.

I think I had already mentioned that clicking the project.mprx simply took me back in a circle to a point where it insisted I have to restore the project, and then ending up back at the (greyed-out, empty) recycle bin, so that wasn't going to work.

Finally in desperation I decided to go for the nuclear (or 'nukular' if you're George W. Bush) option: I used a professional uninstaller to remove MemoQ from my system completely, including all the scattered files, references and registry entries associated with it throughout the system. Then I reinstalled from scratch.

Happily, it worked even though I lost all my History. Simply clicking the 'project.mprx' file which I had previously saved to another directory opened my fresh copy of MemoQ which had no false memory of the file 'already' being in its recycle bin, and I was able to pick up my work without having lost anything -- apart from several hours of anguish and disappearing up my own increasingly-frantic mouse-clicks.

Thanx once more to those who helped -- good to know there's help out there when needed!

Is it a bug or a feature? Once the project is checked out on one computer, I cannot check it out on another computer.

Is it at all possible? Am I doing something wrong?

Something seems to have changed recently in the MemoQ behaviour of Shift+F3. It used to be "Toggle Case", meaning that when you hit Shift+F3 it would toggle between lower case, first letter cap and all caps. So a lower case word could be switched to first letter cap with one keyboard action.

Now it seems to have changed so that hitting Shift+F3 creates an autopick box with the three choices in it, and you have to either mouse click on the choice or use arrow+tab to select the choice. This can be time consuming and annoying.

Is this an intentional new behaviour or have I unwittingly changed some setting? I have not been able to find a setting for this behaviour.

It is what IT geeks call a 'feechur' (Wiktionary: "An undesirable or misimplemented feature (software capability)." or BAD (Broken As Designed) in version 8.

I and many others have complained about it in support tickets, but so far, they have stubbornly refused to fix it, just as they stubbornly refuse to fix many other bugs and problems in their software and documentation, so I don't intend to renew my paid support when it expires in June.

This awful new Shift+F3 implementation slows down typing and is just a plain pain in the a**.

I'm staying on MemoQ 2015 as long as they keep this nonsense in place. It is just utterly hopeless, and it breaks with the behaviour in other software, for example Word and Memsource.

Has anyone found any interesting new functions in MemoQ 8 or 8.1? I haven't. It seems a total waste of space to me.

Thanks, that was a quick solution, but probably not what the developers intended - revert to MemoQ 2015.

Now, when you have an item in the translation results pane which has a different capitalisation than the one you need (e.g. an item that begins in uppercase when you need it in lowercase), you can type the first letter(s) and Predictive typing will grab the item and adapt to the capitalisation you need. I use this very much indeed and it is faster than having to double-click on an item (or pressing Ctrl+its number) and adapting manually.

As for Shift-F3, I am one of the people who complained about it. I dislike it profoundly and would like the decision reverted. Who came up with the absurd idea in the first place?

Aha. I had complained that it doesn't recognise a TB entry if the case doesn't match when you start typing, even when case sensitivity is no. They said they thought they had fixed it in version 8, but they haven't. But you say it works for translation results. They just haven't fixed it for TB entries.

Unfortunately the new Shift+F3 behaviour causes far more inconvenience than getting this tiny advantage is worth.

General problem with memoQ 2015

Hi,
I have a little problem with my copy of memoQ 2015 (version 7.8.161).
When I get a "handoff" from a client and I click on it, memoQ opens as usual, then I chose a carpet and the import process starts... but it doesn't finish. The green bar gets close to the end, but NOT to the end... The programme/system doesn't freeze or anything (I can cancel the process) but it doesn't go further that that. Therefore, it is very annoying, as I can't use the programme and I have to reject work from my (actually few) memoQ clients.
I've also noticed that the programme can't connect to servers, i.e. if I get a server address from a client, I cannot connect to it, the system says that the server it's not available. It could be that these two problems are related. I've also noticed that the update function doesn't work, as the programme can't connect to the update server.

Any hints would be appreciated.

(BTW, I'm using Windows 10)

Many thanks!

J.M.

General problem with memoQ 2015 | Big TMs?

Post title: Big TMs?

Usually this kind of long delays relates to big translation memories attached to the project and the long time needed for the TMs to be ported to your computer, especially if the customer has a low outgoing throughput. Have you simply tried to wait more and eventually ask your customer to supply the TM(s) in TMX format?

Another possibility is that your customer's memoQ Server is not the same version as your memoQ client. Most memoQ Servers must have moved on to memoQ Adriatic (8.0 or later). It might be wise to double-check with your customer what they are using.

If none of these is the cause, you might want to get in touch with Kilgray for help. They are usually very useful.

I had EXACTLY the same problem with unreachable servers and update service just yesterday. Even de- and reinstalling MemoQ 2015 didn't help. Then I checked my firewall settings. I had installed a firewall software a couple of days earlier and forgot to deactivate the Windows standard firewall. There were no conflicts up until the moment I chose to actively block MemoQ in that firewall software because I could not reach my customer's server because I forgot it moved to a new address (this block prevented the time out msg every time I confirmed a segment). When the job was done I took the block out of the list but still I could not reach any address. Only when I turned off the windows firewall everything worked again. Seems as if putting memoq on the blocklist of that software firewall also created an entry in the windows firewall which was not deleted when I deleted it in the software firewall shortly after.

Long story short: Try to disable any firewall program you are running. The fact that you can neither reach your client's server NOR the update service points towards a firewall or general connectivity issue. Maybe that also fixes the long loading times?

Hope that helps!

Thank you for the good tips.

@Tomás: The last project did contain a big TM, and it finally worked when I tried it later, although I had to wait for a long time. I'm also using an old version of the server, so I guess it's time for an update (once again... :) )

@Marc: In my system, the Windows Firewall ist run by the Norton Antivirus. I checked the Norton firewall settings and all memoQ programmes are allowed through it. I'm not sure if that was previously so, as I did deinstall and reinstall memoQ, which might have solved the problem, as I notice that I can now at least connect to the update server. I haven't tried any other servers yet, though I'm hopeful. I guess it would be wise to update to the latest version.

Best regards,

José

Hello Kilgray,

After I purchased the license for 616$ (!), all I received was a message saying a ticket was opened with 'normal' priority and that a sales representative will contact me to give me my serial number (...).

First of all, why the hell do I need to wait for a representative to contact me for this?! There are numerous secure technologies which are used by literally every digital product creator on the planet, to immediately and safely deliver serial numbers to customers. it's not 1996 anymore Kilgray...

Secondly, How much longer do I have to wait ?! I've received FAR superior customer service for products I bought for 30$, unlike this 616$ punch in the nuts.

Ridiculous.
