First I received in an email that the author of this thread asked to remove my post.

How did the "author" of this thread ask to remove my post about systems checking whether somebody can translate by he/his own, if the author of this thread does not even have a valid email address? :)

Error.

No valid email address on file.

General error when exporting to sdlrpx.

I have translated a rather big file that I imported into MemoQ 6.2 from a sdlppx. But when exporting I get a general error with "The XML markup is not well formed in row 68. The open tag is missing for a g close tag" in the details. What is going on and is there some way around this? I was able to export bilingual to a memoQ xliff, to a Trados-compatible bilingual doc, and to a two-column rtf. I asked the client to provide a sdlxliff, so I retranslated from the memory, but the same thing happened when I tried to export to the sdlxliff. Row 68 does not refer to the segment number apparently, rather possibly to a working xml file that does not appear in the project folders.

Post title: Recycle bin is a folder

Hello,

I have just started using and playing around with memoq and found that the recycled files are moved to the folder set in the global settings: "archive folder" (memoq have messed up their terminology here it seems, as archive, backup and recycle bin seem to mean the same things in different versions?)

When a project file/folder is inside the folder defined as archive folder in the global settings memoq thinks it is in the recycle bin.

If you move the project file/folder out of the "archive folder" using the windows file explorer and double click the project file it should open again normally in memoq.
You can then move it to the recycle bin again and have it in there twice :)

After further investigation, I found that the system "hangs" after completing the XML export. As such, I could check the tags in the XML file. A better solution would be for the Preview "editor" to support the Find operation that would allow me to search for the XML tags.

Dear All,

first of all please sorry if such a question has already been posted in the past. I have searched through past posts, but I have not found it.

I am thinking to buy another PC, on which I will need to transfer my MemoQ license (I own MemoQ 2015 Translator Pro) and I have some questions:
1. What are the steps to be taken in order to transfer my license from my old PC to the new one?
2. And how can I maintain my old projects (including their TMs and TBs) without losing any data? Is it enough to copy the related folders in the C disk of my new PC?

Thank you very much for your support, any help and avice is much appreciated!

Kind regards,
Marcella

Hello,

I receive the following error while importing from mqxlz edited in Trados:

"The required id attribute of tag "bpt" is not unique. The error occured somewhere before line 4325 and position 244."

What is to do? The file is very big and must be imported, so it cannot be entered segment by segment manually.

Transferring license from one PC to another one | Same here

Post title: Same here

I've been migrating to a new PC over the last week, and I've just been through the final fight with the MemoQ software. They don't make it easy for you.

The licence question is easy: you can use your licence on two computers. MemoQ will automatically get your licence for you from the MemoQ server when you start it the first time on the new computer.

But when it comes to the migration, the advice from Kilgray is pretty useless. Nobody seems to have given it a thought that translators sometimes need to migrate to new hardware. They have written a couple of not-very-useful articles, probably just to pretend that they have done something about migration, but their method to migrate the projects involves manually opening or re-checking out every single project on the new computer, which is obviously an utterly hopeless migration method.

They also tell you to export all your resources, set up new resources on the new computer, and import all the exported ones manually.

And finally they tell you that you will lose all your settings.

There was no useful help to get from support.

This is even worse than migrating Outlook. If they designed a method for emptying a bathtub the same way, they would tell you to use a teaspoon.

So I did something else. I looked around in my system and found that all MemoQ's files are in just three locations:

TBs, TMs, and other resources:
C:\ProgramData\MemoQ

Settings:
C:\Users\{user}\AppData\Roaming\MemoQ

Projects:
C:\Users\{user}\My Documents\My memoQ Projects

There is no need to worry about the Windows Registry, as they don't use it much, and only for fixed values.
The installation takes care of the C:\Program Files (x86) folder, so there is no need to worry about that either.

So here are the migration steps for migrating from a Windows computer with MemoQ 8.5 to a new computer. It probably also works for other versions, but it's probably wise to ensure that both computers have the same version.

After installing MemoQ on the new computer, I shut MemoQ down on the old computer and copied the above three folders to the new computer (via a flash drive, but you could also use Google Drive or another cloud method). If these folders already exist on the new computer, they should be renamed first. When everything works, the renamed ones can be deleted.

Then I started up MemoQ on the new computer. It first prompted me to get my licence from their server. Easy.

Then it prompted me to re-enter my server credentials for the last project I had worked on. Although parts of the credentials are in the AppData folder, the passwords are probably stored in a way that means that they can't just be copied like this.

I got the error message below. It does not seem important. I ignored it. It did not show up again.

After this, it seemed to work. All my TBs, TMs, etc. are there, and so are my settings and projects.

This method is much like putting your entire house on rollers when moving instead of moving all the furniture out and back in.

In my case, it was a bit more complicated, as I needed to change both my Windows user and part of my Documents file path. As MemoQ has stored the old user and path everywhere, it would not be able to find the projects just like that.

The solution I found was to define two so-called junctions from the old locations to the new. This simply means that all MemoQ's requests to the old locations will be automatically redirected by Windows to the new locations. Once you know how to set it up, it's very simple. See .

I had first tried to update the file paths in MemoQ's files, but I ran into trouble because some of the files are SQL CE databases, which you can't just edit. Although I found a utility for SQL line commands, I haven't found the right commands yet.

But Kilgray should be providing a decent migration method. Their recommendations are just about the most complicated method they could dream up.

How do you track changes while you are editing a file in MemoQ 2015

What I'm looking for is the function to see my own changes while I'm editing the file, instead of seeing what the translator had changed before forwarding the file to me for editing.

Thank you for your help.

Post title: Any instruction on how to use "track change" in MemoQ 2015 will be appreciated

From

I saw this instruction:
"Editing with change tracking in the translation document
If you want to see change tracking in the editor, open a translation document and select Track Changes on the Review ribbon tab.

▪Use Against Last Received Version if you want to highlight the changes you entered since the last version that you received. Use this, for example, to review the changes you made as a reviewer to the translator's translation.
..."

However, after I checked "Use Against Last Received Version", the translator's changes came up, which I really don't need to see. What I need is to see my own changes on the translation but my changes are not marked even if I've checked "Use Against Last Received Version".

Did I miss anything?

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately I am using the free trial of MemoQ at the moment so don't think I have access to the tools that would allow me to do that.

I have imported the original documents again and the translations have been saved/remembered, so I now have second, working versions of the project files.

Now, my problem stems from the fact that unfortunately these are not showing up in the Resource Control panel when I try to export the files as a TMX.
Hi, ltempleman. I'm having the same problem, but I'm using an online server, so the TMs are not stored in my PC. Have you found a solution?

How does MemoQ count unprotected tags

Poster: Elvira Schmid

Hi all,
I continuously have problems agreeing a wordcount with one of my customers. They designed their own wordcount tool, which always counts less words than MemoQ. We now agreed on the MemoQ count, but since their texts always contain many unprotected tags, they now always want a price reduction "because the unprotected tags are counted in the wordcount".
Does anyone know how MemoQ counts in general (numbers, hyphenated words, unproteced tags, etc.)

Here is what their files look like.
Ps: is there an easy way for them to avoid all this to be shown in the translatable text?

Grateful for any answer.

ProZ.com's ancient forum software does not allow for the accurate display of code, so you have to either escape HTML-like elements (does not always do the trick) or take a screenshot.

Here is what Elvira refers to (her text is all black, I coloured it for easier viewing):

The "OBJ" is an object replacement character with the code U+FFFC, which is a character used to replace something else when converted to plain text (as Elvira's ProZ.com post would be), so it's not unlikely that Elvira's file contains something else at that point in the file. I'm not saying this is relevant to her query.

Load the text into memoQ, open the file.
Find the Regex Tagger symbol (in the "Preparation" tab) and click on it.
In the window that opens, under "Filter configuration", select the option "Tags and entities".
Click the OK button on the bottom.

Now all tags should show up as symbols only and won't be included in the word count.

Applying auto change in multiple files

Hi memoQ experts,
I've come across a challenge in one of my managed projects:

I received from my client approx 40 files for translation.

The repetition rate was quite high, which was great, but soon after assigning it to the translator, it turns out there was a challenge which I could not find an appropriate solution in memoQ, hence the translator had to work on Trados.

The challenge was how to auto-apply a change in a specific segment in the rest of the exact matches located in the rest of the 39 files?

For example:

If the translator translated: "Click here for more details" and confirmed it but later on he wanted to change the translation to something else. How could we make sure that the changed translation will be applied into the rest of the files where Click here for more details appears?

It seems that this is an option which exists in Trados.

Thank you for your support

Omer

Create a view with all 40 files! Then either let the translator work on the view (assign the view only to him/her in the project if it is an online project), or send the translator a bilingual memoQ file of the view (and not the files).
