Hello everyone

An annoying feature of MemoQ is that it opens the target file in its associated viewer automatically when it creates the target file. When the target file is Word, it opens it in Word. When the target file has no clear association (e.g. XLIFF files), I get that Windows dialog asking me which program I want to use to open a file with. A similar thing happens when I export bilingual RTF files -- MemoQ automatically opens it in Word. I know I can deselect the option in the bilingual export dialog (it gets re-selected every time, though), but I can see no such deselection option for when the translated file is generated. Do you know if it is possible to tell MemoQ not to open or attempt to open files in their associated viewers automatically?

Thanks. I'm not sure what you mean by "in the same folder where you have saved your project", for in my tests (if I use the "stored path" option), the target file is created in the same folder where the source file is/was when it was added to the project (perhaps that is what you meant).

So... Trados makes a copy of the source file and puts it in the project folder, but MemoQ doesn't make a copy of the source file, and the "stored path" is the path where the file originates from (which could be anywhere on your computer). Adding files from different locations isn't a problem in Trados because Trados doesn't save the target files back into those original locations.

I wouldn't call this a "problem" with MemoQ but it is worth being aware of it: if you add files from different locations, each of the target files will be generated in each of the original locations. If you move/delete/rename any folder in the tree, MemoQ will recreate the path (i.e. recreate the folders using the names that they had when you added the file to the project).

This means that "best practice" for when using MemoQ may be to have a dedicated folder (e.g. "My MemoQ Projects" on the Desktop or in Documents) and every time [u]manually[/u] create "project" folders in it for each project's source files, and then adding them to the project from there, so that there are no difficulties with moved/renamed folders where the original files are stored.

In the Options (gearboxes at the top-left), select the Miscellaneous panel, disable "Automatically open target document after exporting". Done!

Hello

In WFC, I can type the first letter or letters of any word that appears in the source text, and press TAB, and that word will be copied into the target field. The same applies to e.g. text in brackets (parentheses): if I type the opening bracket, and press TAB, the entire piece of text from opening bracket to closing bracket is copied into the target field. Is there a similar function in MemoQ?

You have two related features exactly for that in memoQ. You want to look for information about "Predictive typing" and "AutoPick".

With these features, you get to types of suggestions:
- For Predictive Typing, terms, concordance fragments found in the TM (what they call LSC, which show up in yellow in the translation results)...
- For AutoPick, mostly placeables (numbers, autotranslatable elements...)

Once you have learnt about what types of suggestions you get with each feature, you can influence their behaviour with the two-tabbed dialog box you can open from the grid, Translation tab, Translation Settings in the ribbon > Predictive typing and AutoPick.

These are among the features that save me a lot of time daily, so it pays to learn and experiment with them.

Because I work in two different alphabets, I've never looked for a memoQ shortcut like the one you describe in WFC. However, there is a keyboard shortcut that transfers text you have selected using your mouse from the source field to the target field: Ctrl+Shift+T.

There is also a shortcut that transfers everything in the source field to the target field: Ctrl+Shift+S.

Personally, I use Dragon Professional Individual 15.3 to dictate translations, and I try to avoid touching the keyboard any more than I have to. I've created voice-activated macros to execute those macros and do the heavy lifting for me by copying a desired number of words left or right of a cursor I place in the source field and then transferring them to the desired location in the target field.

Predictive typing suggests translation from different sources like termbase or muses. As far as I understand Samuel wants source text copied and pasted in target, not translation. Therefore, Predictive typing is not “exactly for that” at all. Autopick is slightly closer to this task but 1. it is limited to placeables and 2. You cannot change the shortcut (Crrl) to anything else, which makes using this feature extremely cumbersome. I always disable it because Ctrl is widely used for other commands and it often prevents those commands from running correctly, when Autopick takes over the Control functionality.
These are two major weak points in memoQ.

Okay, so... then, in order to make the source text available in predictive typing, I gather I have to create a dummy project with the same files (or use the active project, if all segments are currently untranslated), and do copy-source-to-target and confirm all those "translations", and penalise the TM so that its translations are never suggested as fuzzy matches. Can you think of a quicker way to accomplish it?

Thanks, but some of what I would like to have copied are not definable as placeables. For example, generic drug names and chemical compounds.

Hello everyone

1. A client of mine wants me to use tracked changes in MemoQwebtrans, but I'm going to check out the project in MemoQ. If I use tracked changes in MemoQ, will the tracked edits survive the transfer to MemoQwebtrans? I assume so, but I might as well ask.

2. I'm using bilingual review files exported from MemoQ, edited in MS Word. Do I have to use tracked changes in Word to ensure that the edits end up as tracked edits in MemoQ? I'd very much like to NOT use tracked changes in Word (the translation is a disaster, so it'll take me much longer to edit if I have to use tracked changes in Word). Is it possible to import a bilingual review file that does NOT use tracked changes, but have the edits imported as tracked in MemoQ?

It would appear to be so. I used tracked changes in MemoQ, and when I confirmed the segments in MemoQ, and went to MemoQwebtrans editor, the segments were edited and the edits were tracked in the same way as they were tracked in MemoQ.

My guess would be "yes", because when the bilingual review file is imported (this is called "update" in MemoQ), there is a question about whether you want to use tracked changes. In the end, I did use tracked changes in Word, but the way edits are tracked in Word differ from how they are tracked in MemoQ, which leads me to suspect that MemoQ accepts all edits first and then generates its own tracks based on the differences. These self-generated tracks are not always useful, so I think a good approach may be to send my Word file to the translator as well, so that he can see my edits.

Here is an example of my tracked edits in Word, and what MemoQ did to it:

This is the opposite of useful (in my humble opinion).

Hi Samuel,

The changes you make in the checked out package will definitely be reflected in the webTrans version. However, it is worth double checking the version of the file that comparisons are being made against before getting started or uploading the proofread version as this seems to change between webTrans and the desktop version and can make cause confusion for PMs/Reviewers 2s.

I am less sure about number 2 but I believe that bilingual review files only read the file extensions and data for matching up segments when importing. Just be careful not to break any tags or change the order of anything by accident and the changes should be tracked when you import the review file. Definitely not as sure about this though.

When I first started learning to use CafeTran, I was pleasantly surprised to find that when I selected something from the source and let go of the mouse button, it automatically was placed in the target!

I know this doesn´t help your question for MemoQ, but I just wanted to mention that nice feature of not having to also click Copy and Paste.

Hello everyone

With Trados (and most other offline CAT tools), I can easily create a "backup" or dummy copy of certain files if I want to try something that I might want to be able to roll back, but since MemoQ's projects don't work with files that one can manipulate outside of MemoQ, it would seem that any large action that I do on MemoQ (e.g. update from bilingual review) is non-reversible. I could use the "backup and restore" feature, but that only works for offline projects. Is there a way to simply duplicate an active project locally so that I can do my experimentation on the duplicate project first?

Hello everyone

I've successfully used bilingual review a few times on non-local projects, but today I can't get the View to update. I keep getting this unhelpful error message, no matter what I try:

Any idea what I can do about this?

Added: I've now gone as far as to recreate the view, export for bilingual review afresh, copy/paste the target column from the one file to the other (same number of segments, etc.), but to no avail. I don't want to spend too much time fixing things that may not have an effect on the problem.

* Would having edited a locked segment cause this?
* Would having a tag (mqInternal) that is e.g. italics in the source but not in the target, cause this?
* Would having text marked as mqInternal in the target but not in the source cause this?
* Would having text marked as mqInternal in the source but not in the target cause this?

I just spent 3 hours checking that all of these things are perfectly the same as the source text, but... still the error. The job's deadline is getting closer and closer...

Okay, sorted. It may simply have been that the files were too large or contained too many numbers. When I reduced the View to just a few files at a time, I was able to do the import without a problem. Three files contained over 1000 segments each containing only numbers or only tags. These files still gave me the same error message even if I tried to process them one file at a time. It was only after I checked all pre-translated (number-only, tag-only) segments and confirmed them, and created a View excluding confirmed segments, that I was able to update it.

I wonder what the limit was: the number of segments, or the number of [consecutive] segments containing only numbers or tags.

You could save all the files as bilingual, and then open them in another project.
It is a workaround, not an elegant solution, but bilingual files also provide disaster relief if your project gets lost or something else goes wrong.
All the files can be saved in one step, and placed in a time-stamped directory.

You can create a snapshot by clicking RMB on a file or files and selecting the 'Create Snapshot...' command. It creates a current copy of your translation. You can revert to this snapshot later by clicking RMB on the file and selecting the 'History/Reports' command. This will open the list of versions for your current file. From that list, you can restore any version.
*You can create snapshots for multiple files at a time, but when reverting, you can only choose one file at a time, because obviously memoQ cannot show all snapshots/versions (can be dozens) of multiple files (can be dozens again).

Don't forget to add comments when you create snapshots manually, because memoQ creates them automatically too, and it may be difficult for you to find exactly what snapshot you created yourself.

memoQ creates snapshots automatically in some cases. Those cases include Import, Export, Update from bilingual file, Pre-translate, and maybe some other events I am not aware of.
You mentioned that you updated your file, so there should be a snapshot already there (maybe even two snapshots: before update and after update). Just click RMB on your file and press History/Reports to check out.

Thanks, but is this option available for non-local projects? In the examples I checked, the option on the right-click menu was greyed out for non-local projects, and the option to "restore version" in the History dialog was also greyed out.
