The normal procedure would be to check out the online project from the server on the old computer.

Had the project been synchronised from the new computer – or did you work with auto sync.? If not, you should synchronise it now from the new computer – if it still works, which you don't tell us.

The project works fine on the new computer, it's just that I need to ger more RAM installed in it. Until then, I have to use my old computer.

So I have to check it out a second time, even though the MemoQ files for this project on the external harddrive works fine on my new computer?

Yes. Just be sure to sync. the project from the new computer first.

Just moving the files on the external drive clearly isn't as simple as you think. The project has to be indexed, the paths identical, etc.

Hello fellow translators,

Do you know if there is a way to conveniently add words to termbase for languages whose morphology routinely allows for considerable alterations in words? One example would be Georgian, a language which I am studying, where verbs can change at the beginning and at the end according to person, tense, mood, etc.
Let's make a example with a random verb, to prepare, momzadeba (მომზადება). I won't use official phonemic transcription, just the commonly used one, to better explain.

The root is mzad.

According to how you use it, this verb could be anything, from vamzadeb to movumzade, from momzadebdi to mogimzadiat and so on. But as far as I understood, wildcards in MemoQ only allow for an alteration at the beginning or at the end of each term. So either | or *, but not at the same time.

Did anyone else stumble in such a problem? I'm sure plenty of other languages pose this problem. If yes, what do you do? Do you use a workaround?
Thanks,

G.

Why aren't the termbase hits sorted in the translation window according to the termbase list order?

Why aren't the termbase hits sorted in the translation window according to the termbase list order?

I have termbase AAA first in the view Term bases in MemoQ and termbase BBB as second in this list. Both are ticked to be included in the project to give hits in the translation view. And they both work fine. But I get the hits in no order at all, with hits from termbase BBB as first hit in the translation view, then for example hit 2 and 3 from termbase AAA and so on.

I clicked the Translation results eye icon, and changed to Order term base hits primarily by rank and metadata, so this option is ticked as well as the option Show term base hits with empty target and Longest source term hides shorter matches. I let the option Order of appearance in text be ticked as it is (I have to select either this option or Alphabetical).

But I still get hits from termbase BBB first for the 11 first hits, then one hit from termbase AAA.

Below is a short list of Russian words with root 'бег' ('run').
I can't see any option other than just adding as many terms as you can and set the Matching parameter to 'Fuzzy' and the Case sensitivity to 'No' for all new and existing terms (you can do it in batch). This is how memoQ can cover as many variants as possible.

How should I remedy the internal application error in MemoQ that pops up upon pressing a button?

I happens periodically, I press a button and suddenly this annoying pop-up window displays:

The requested task could not be completed or an operation failed, but you can safely continue your work.
Internal application error.

Last time MemoQ support advised me to deactivate the termbase plugin EuroTermBank. It seems to have worked then when I check my e-mail and no more requests for help from me. But this time it does not work. I've even deactivated the remaining two termbase plugins. I still get this pop-up window.

The details from the error message:

TYPE:
System.ArgumentException
MESSAGE:
Value must be non-negative and < the length of the segment's plain text
Parameter name: range

...this is another question that should be sent directly to Kilgray, and not to fellow translators. MemoQ designers and testers are the only competent specialists able to solve this and your previous issues. Before you do that, you may try to download the latest version/build and reinstall the software - sometimes such simple actions means are sufficient.

There is also a possibility that the termbase plugin includes a bug showing up only in very special circumstances.

Actually I never heard of the Ctrl+, command in memoQ. (This shortcut works for Trados.)
Probably you mean the AutoPick feature?
If so, go to Translation > Translation Settings > Predictive typing and AutoPick > AutoPick tab > check 'Enable AutoPick'
Once done, pressing Ctrl will suggest placeables for you.

How to get the real segment number

Hello,

While editing a large number of joint files in a view, the segment number that is visible in the editor window is relative to all the segments in that view. However, I occasionally would need to use a reference to the current string while communicating with the client/reviewer. Is there a way to get the actual segment number of the current segment relative to its original document?

Of course, one way of doing this is to exit the editor, open the relevant document singly and find that segment, but that is what I am trying to avoid, for obvious reasons.

Thanks.

You cannot open your glued view and any document from that view simultaneously.
However you can go to the segment in question by clicking on the 'Jump to' command in the View mode. It is located just under the percentage column, bottom right corner of the editor (or bottom left corner of the 'Translation results' pane).
Once you click it, memoQ will bring you to the original document and segment.

Thanks, too. At first I could not figure out what you mean by "the View mode", but after a while it dawned on me that you mean "the view of the View" (it's a bit confusing that there is a "View" tab and that a glued set of segments is also called a "View", and in computerese any screen you look at is also called a "view"). But I got it, thanks: when the "View" (i.e. the glued set of segments) is open, at the bottom of the match percentage column is a link called "Jump to". I wonder why this link isn't present in the right-click menu when you right-click on a segment.

I found no way to "jump back", so you have to memorize the segment's segment number in the View before using "Jump to".

Where does MemoQ store the files?

Topic: Where does MemoQ store the files?
Poster: Samuel Murray

Hello

I'm trying out MemoQ again. I'm familiar with Trados, the Trados workflow, and the Trados folder structure.

I use the default location of project folders, namely Username/Documents/My memoQ projects/. I have always thought that MemoQ's file format is MQXLIFF, but... there are no MQXLIFF files in those folders. In fact, the source files for my projects are not in those folders either. Sometimes, there are files there that have the same names as my source files, but they are zero bytes, so I assume they're just placeholders.

With Trados, the source files and SDLXLIFF files for a project is stored in subfolders of the project's folder. So it's easy to "get to it" and to make copies of it etc. MemoQ creates folders with randomized names, and none of them contain the source files or any MQXLIFF files. Is MQXLIFF just an export format, then? (Although I also work on online projects, this applies also to local projects that I have created with files from my computer.)

If I want to zip up a project that I'm finished with, in order to save it somewhere from where I can unzip and restore it later (either to work on it again, or to be able to prove to myself how I translated something), what files must I save? Or should I use the "backup/restore" option for that?

Thanks
Samuel

Indeed, internally what you see in the Projects folder in memoQ is a set of files that make no apparent sense and do not have file names you can easily identify.

The closest I can think of if you want to make a "backup" of one particular project is to use the Archive Projects Wizard, which makes a "package" which you can place in a certain folder (normally, in the default folder the archives) or take elsewhere and, if you need it later on, you can unarchive into memoQ again. This Archive feature is meant for projects you do not really plan to work again on in the short term, though.

Personally, for backups, I think the wisest idea is to backup of all of memoQ's data folders.

Hi Samuel
I'm also trying out MemoQ as a few German clients use it.
It's the first time I've used the program so don't take my word for it but in the Project home tab you can right click on the project file then select Export -> Export Bilingual which gives you a dialogue box where you can save a memoQxliff, Trados Doc or rtf table.
I saved a memoQxliff like this and could open it in Studio. Opening it in MemoQ takes you back to the Project home tab.

Presumably saving an mqxliff like this would save all your work and can be used as a backup.

Post title: totally different from sdl trados

Memoq is totally different from Trados when it comes to the way it stores files.
The equivalent sdlxliff of trados in Memoq is called mqxlz and if you want to get hold of it you need to export it as a bilingual file, whereas in Trados it is stored in the project folder at the moment the project is created.
The Export button has a little arrow below from which you can select among different ways of exporting your translated files.
If you want to get hold of your translared file in the original format and in the target language you just need to tap on the Export button and your file will be saved by default in the same folder where you have saved your project, but not inside the project folder as trados do.
I hope this helps you.
