Urgent: Problem with export of xlif file

I have been translating xlif files created in Wordbee.

No problem during the translation, but when I export the translation from MemoQ, I get the following error message on a number of segments:

Failed to export segment 42. memoQ left the target of this "trans-unit" element empty in the output.

The above segment doesn't contain any tags, but a comment: * x: "(1,1) TableParagraph"

Does anybody know what causes this error and whether there's a fix for this problem?

ETA: I opened the xlif file and it's actually the string above it with a couple of tags inside that has been left empty.

ETA2: I edited all the missing targets in the xlif file. Every single segment that had one or more internal tags didn't export. :(

I thought MemoQ was fully compatible with XLIF. Or could that be a problem with Wordbee?
BTW, I'm using MemoQ V6.5.

Morning Heike,

If you haven't done so already, please get in touch with Support at Kilgray (by e-mail, for example) and send them the error message.

As far as I can tell, the problem has got something to do with the internal structure of the XLIFF file - the message you mention refers to a table, for instance. It's internal and text formatting that results in tags.

It won't help you now, I'm afraid, but if you run "pseudo-translation" next time you import files like this one and then try and export the "translated" file, you'll be able to see if there are any problems with the export before you even start translating the file properly (and can contact your customer for help).

Hi everybody,

I have a MemoQ Professional licence which I use on two laptops (with the extensions 01 and 02 at the end of the serial number). I am now going to buy a PC that is going to be my main computer. This means that before I can use MemoQ on that PC, I need to deactivate the licence on one of the two laptops, correct? If that’s the case, how exactly do I do that?

Just to be on the safe side, you probably want to contact Kilgray and ask them what to do. They will probably have to set something up in their license server.

I am not sure it is necessary to deinstall, try with the "03" suffix. Anyway the best is to ask Kilgray's customer service as Tomas suggests.

Simply install it and use the extension of the machine you intent to scrap.
If memoQ accepts it, it's OK.
If no, ask the support to reset the number.
They answer very quickly.

Generally, mQ checks the license validity by Internet in a regular basis.
If the license is unused, it simply quietly "expires" after 30 days (AFAIK) and you can freely reuse the same number.
The license number will be rejected (in an unpredictable way) if you use the same number "simultaneously" on both machines.
It's rather user friendly and dumb proof, assuming the fair use of the license.

The licenses like 03 will be always rejected if you have only 2 license slots.

My info may be outdated but basically it worked like that in the past.
I'll check it in few hours, I must prepare a different machine for my CAT classes, I didn't use the old one during several weeks...

I simply install MemoQ on new computer (even without deinstallation on the old one). It works OK with -01 suffix (but maybe after some days, I don't remember).

Hello,
I have transformed a rather long PDF documentation into plain UTF-8 text, and made all possible corrections with search/replace/remove to make the Align in MemoQ as easy as possible. I then have defined some exceptions in the segmentation rules.
The result is a very good one, but still I need to work on the Align.

My question is: by joining & splitting segments, will MemoQ add a space beween the splitted part automatically or not? Do I have to chose the end of a word, add a space and only then chose the Join command ?

The answer is yes. There is the danger to glue words together once the MemoQ tags dissapear (by export and editing in other tools.)

Hello everyone

A client of mine has started sending me MemoQ bilingual review files instead of the earlier TTX or XLF formats, for translation. The problem is that the files contain a lot of tags, and to translate it properly, I need to know what the tags mean. In a TTX or XLF viewer, I can see what the full tag is, but in the bilingual review file from MemoQ I see only things like [1] or [2]. The result is that I have to redo many segments after the client's reviewer noted translation errors that are due only because I misguessed what a tag was for.

Is it possible (so that I can tell my agency client) to create a bilingual review file that contains fuller tags instead of just those numbers?

Nice.

Say, the source file is an XLF file and it has a "maxwidth" attribute in the trans-unit tag. Is there any way to get that value into the bilingual review file? I try to keep my translations as short as I can, but about half of the errors that I have to fix, are segment length errors.

Hi Samuel,

Why not just ask the customer for a PDF to show you what the original file looks like? That way, you'll have all the contextual information you need to interpret the tags correctly.

It seems from what you say that your customer wants you to do a final check of a translation, but to do that properly, you'll need to see the source version in its full glory rather than in a tagged form.

Referring to a PDF is something that I would want to avoid, because it would mean that for every segment in the CAT tool, I have to switch windows to the PDF file and locate the segment manually, and even then there will be a measure of guesswork involved, if the tag does not indicate something that is visible on the PDF.

No, I don't have to do the final check. The final check is done by someone else, but I have to implement the fixes. The fixes mostly involve things that I would normally be able to prevent, if I had access to the tags and the original file's code. What I want to prevent is double work.

Hello,

I have figured out solutions for my queries above, but now I have a new question:

In the window that shows the Alignment pairs, there is the option to import / export to or from a mqxlz doc which is (or should be ) a bilingual document.

When I export my alignment pair and then try to open the mqxlz file in the translation document window, this document is then empty.

what is this mqxlz document supposed to do ?
It would be fine if I could get my alignment fully into the translation editor so I can do operations that are not possible in the Alignment grid (especially filtering and completing insertions)

Usually we write about the tools we use to complain. I believe to be fair we should also say good things about them. I want to mention just two things which delighted me about handling terminology in MQ:
1. It has far the best terminology interface comparing with the other CAT tools I have used before. Not only allowing using more than one term base and on the fly entry of terms (these are standard features for most of the second generation CATs), but quite a bit more, like on the fly changing the primary term base, thus diverting the new terms to a different term base. Why is this important? I use specialized term bases limited to a specific field of knowledge/business. For example, I have a term base on a client’s equipment and a separate term base on finance and business. A project usually has a specific term base dealing with the main theme/subject, but it often happens that during the translation you come across a part of the text dealing with a different and very specific subject full of terms not related to the primary term base. For example right now I am translating a newsletter of a heavy machinery manufacturer and I come across a section dealing with financing with term like “tax and depreciation write-offs”, “ loan structure” or “a balloon payment” which I want to keep in the term base on finance and not in the term base on machinery. Unlike most of the other tools, in MQ you can do it without leaving the translation pane to change the primary term base. If at the start of the project you ticked of 2 or more term bases as active for this project, then when translating you simply select the source and the target terms and select one of the active term bases from the drop-down menu in the “Edit Term Base Entry” window. You can select it each time you have found a candidate for one of your term bases, and since by default the previous selection remains valid, you needn’t bother about it too often. I like this feature as it allows me to fill in several specialized term bases each with its own terminology. The other tool which more or less allows it, SDL Studio, can do it, but the procedure is cumbersome and time consuming.
2. Editing of the term bases is also just wonderful. The operations require much fewer clicks that the competitor tools, and again, offers a bit more, e.g. you can reverse the languages without leaving the term base and edit, sorting on the target. This is useful to check for errors and for ensuring consistency.
The more I use it, the more I like it. It would be also interesting to hear critique. Probably not all colleagues are as enthusiastic as I am.

I totally, totally back that statement "The more I use it, the more I love it!"
Like yourself, I love the simplicity of using and editing term bases, but on the QA side, an extremely simple function has actually made quite a big difference to me - the ability to find (and replace) across various documents.
In other CAT tools, I have to go into each individual document and start the search again. That's OK, when the project only contains a few files. On a large and complex project, however, it means I risk missing one. I can do a concordance search to check, if I missed it somewhere, but then I have to work out, which file it belongs to, then go into that file... time wasted.
MemoQ simply moves through the entire project, I see the context each time - smooth and straight-forward workflow.

Hi,
The termbase system in MemoQ is a very well designed one.

What I like most is that terms are merged automatically and it's very easy to manage duplicate entries if any.
You just have to look in the list and find entries called "Duplicate_xxx" where xxx is the duplicate term. I then just check which one has comments or definitions and delete the other(s). Also if duplicates are present, the result window will not fill with repetitions, but neatly lists the terms with their synonyms. Very good.
