I think there are several possible ways you can "re-segment" your TM in memoQ so that it's based on sentences rather than paragraphs. Ask on the dedicated mailing list, as this is where the real experts are.

If you use the language option "Norwegian" instead of for instance "Norwegian (bokmål)", you will have to copy and rename some spelling files from nb-no.* to just no.* On my computer they are in the folder C:\ProgramData\MemoQ\Spelling\Hunspell.
I see I have copied and renamed nb-no.dic and nb-no.aff - to no.dic and no.aff.

Hi Carina,

If you go to Project home / Settings / Segmentation rules, clone the segmentation rule set, edit it and delete all the segmentation rules (i.e. the segmentation rule set will be empty), then use it in the project, you are able to get memoQ to segment by paragraph rather than by sentences. You need to turn this into the default resource afterwards under Tools/Options/Default resources/Segmentation rules.

This will probably help, but you need to import your documents again - memoQ won't resegment already imported documents.

Just give it a try!

How to move termbase from Trados to memoQ? | Sorry, first it is Tab-delimited, not CSV

Open your MT term base, select "CATALOG" in the left navigation pane (initally when you open your term base "TERMS" is selected by default). In the navigation tree under "Catalog Categories" click on "Export" and in the window on the right you will see your choices for export. Select "Tab-delimited export definition". Click the right mouse button and in the menu select "Process" and select the destination.
Then open memoQ, select or create a new term base. Click on it to make it active and then select "Import terminology" in the middle row of options below the list of term bases. Browse to your tab-delimited term base which you exported from MultiTerm and select it. Now the import window will open. For separator select "Tab". In the preview window in the bottom part of the import window find the fields that contain the source term (in my term base it is F5), go to the fields window just above the preview and select the number of the field containing the source term and click on the radio button "Import as term" and select the source language from the dopdown menu on the right (this list of the languages is supplied from the list you made when creating the term base, so basically there will be only 2 choices - source language and target language). Now find the number of the target term field in the preview pane (in my term base it is F10). Go to the Fileds Window above the preview and select this number and again select the radio button "Import as Term" and select the language for this field - apparently it will be the target language. After this click OK and the import starts.

"Placeables" in memoQ | Still doesn't work

In the meanwhile, I have purchased memoQ 2013 and still haven't found how to make this work. Googling the problem just brought me back to my own question here. Can anyone help?

I have set the Auto-Translation rule as suggested, checked "Recognize terms, auto-translatables and non-translatables" in the AutoPick tab, Enabled AutoPick amd "Always show AutoPick markers in the source text", but nothing happens. What am I doing wrong?

importing TMs

I think I'm using MemoQ 2013 (I have it at work, so I don't have access here at home).

I want add multiple TMs to a project and then import .tmx TM files into those files. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, so I suspect I'm missing something.

I guess my initial basic question is, how do I control which TM in my MemoQ file receives the contents of the imported .tmx file?

And then my second one would be: if the .tmx isn't reaching that TM, what might I be doing wrong?

Thanks for your help!

So about a week ago, I downloaded MemoQ (2013 R, I think) to my computer at home for the 45-day trial period. A few days later, my computer decided to reset to purchase settings, wiping out a bunch of stuff including my MemoQ download. I redid the download, but now my software tells me that I have no license to use it. Is there any way I can continue my free trial?

Just send a support email: [email removed] . When I had a 45-day trial I had some questions close to the end of the trial period and memoQ's support provided me with a key that extended the trial another 45 days. Their support is very easy to deal with.

I did later purchase the software.

I actually love the software and was disappointed that I wouldn't get to work with it anymore. I found LOTS of things much more intuitive and easier to do than they are in Trados, which I've been using so far.

Eric, you are telling me! My productivity shot up when I moved from Trados (where I was just a number) to memoQ (where I feel like a customer, with all the positives that the true meaning of that term involves). I wouldn't even consider going back to Trados for all the tea in China.

I wasn't even thinking of customer support, although Trados seems to make it unnecessarily difficult to learn how to use their product and want payment for support that seems like it should be a normal part of their service.

In a few minutes, I learned that I could generate a TM AND and term base with a single piece of software, modify the source text as well as the target text, and get solution suggestions without first creating a term base that tends to make Trados unstable. Not to mention how much easier and more accurate alignments are. And I'm just getting started.

One of the TMs is always the Primary TM, which is where the TMX would normally be imported to. However, I believe you can simply select any TM and click on Import from TMX and that TM will be populated.

I cannot help you with the second question, though I presume that if the language is not the same then there may be some compatibility issues.

Hi Istvan,

I have followed step by step what you wrote. MemoQ imports the TM correctly and segments it by paragraph but trying to import a document which I already translated with Across not all segments match 100%.

Do you have an idea? Thank you very much,

Carina

Hi Carina,

I'm afraid no idea anymore. I have never used Across, and can't really imagine how they are segmenting/storing texts. I suggest that you open the TMX file in a text editor and have a look at their segmentation - you'll see what counts as a segment, and you'll see whether there is any natural rule or not.

It's quite normal in almost all CAT hopping scenarios.
E.g. the tags may not be handled in he same way in both tools, the matching algorithms are different (e,g, the way the formatting is handled in memoQ).

E.g. in DVX, a sentence like:
I have three cats.
and
I have three cats.
are considered as 100% matches while memoQ applies a formatting penalty.
Each approach has its pros and cons.
I.e., indeed these sentences are not identical but the abstract DVX environment is usually faster because it's no need to apply a different formatting.

The same with the Trados matching, the match values are different for Word+Workbench, TagEditor and Studio.
These differences may be quite big for heavily formatted segments.

Try to enable/disable Trados TMX processing when importing TMX files.
The resulting matching will be different for formatted segments.
It should work also for TMX files exported from Across.
Just try it.
But I doubt it will be 100% compatible.

Cheers
GG

Import and export of folders

Hi,

I have a lot of files. The files are organized in folders. Names of the files are often same in different folders. Is it possible to import the folder of this project with its subfolders and to export then translated files into the same subfolders?

Thank you

When you import files into your project, simply select 'Import folder structure.'

Post title: Of course!

You simply use the import option "Import folder structure..." and choose the root folder from which you want to import, and when the time comes to exporting the files, choose "Export (stored path)".

There is one caveat though: depending on your export path rules (see the Settings - Export path rules in your project), the filename of the exported file might end up having the locale of the target language, something that could cause trouble to your customer.

You can easily change the export path rules so that only the original filename is used when exporting the files. Check the online help for more information.
